Waste Collection Volume Declines

Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd's (LLSB) SMG project has observed a notable decrease in the monthly average of waste collected from the Klang River. This figure has fallen from approximately 1,500 MT in 2016 to around 900 MT currently. During the first month of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in 2020, waste collection was recorded at 580 MT, with the project achieving Class III water quality standards on 90 per cent of days that month.
Composition of Removed Waste

The 67,000 MT of waste collected since 2016 comprises various non-organic items. These include materials such as glass, aluminium, plastic, cardboard, rubber, and even larger items like tyres and furniture. In 2020 alone, SMG collected approximately 12,000 MT of waste, representing a slight reduction from the 12,904 MT collected in 2019.
Declining Trend and Future Outlook

While a declining trend in waste volume has been observed since 2016, the rate of reduction is becoming smaller. Experts suggest that further significant decreases will likely require a drastic shift in public and industrial attitudes towards river protection. LLSB is also exploring initiatives to repurpose collected waste, discussing potential recycling test projects with companies like Nestle Malaysia and seeking waste-to-energy or waste-to-product solutions.
