The 50-year-old marketing manager, identified as Kai Li, reported that the deception occurred over an eight-month period before she realised she was being targeted. The scam began when Kai Li received a private message on Facebook from what appeared to be Tan's official account.
Initial Contact and Deception

Kai Li, a long-time supporter of Desmond Tan since his participation in Star Search, was initially thrilled to receive a message from the actor's verified account. The scammer exploited this by expressing gratitude for her support, a tactic that convinced Kai Li due to the account's verified status. The conversation soon moved from Facebook to other messaging applications such as Line and WeChat, where the scammer cultivated an online relationship with Kai Li, employing affectionate nicknames and romantic declarations.
Financial Demands and Broken Promises

After establishing a connection, the scammer requested funds from Kai Li, claiming it was for travel expenses to meet in Shanghai. Kai Li provided RM7,000 for this purpose, but the planned trip was cancelled. The scammer attributed the failure to Tan's management agency and subsequently requested an additional RM3,000, citing tax issues. Later, another invitation to Shanghai for Christmas and New Year's was extended, with Kai Li sending RM10,000 for travel. This trip also failed to materialise.
Escalation and Realisation

The scammer's demands escalated, with a request for RM40,000 to help terminate Tan's contract with his agency. The scammer claimed dissatisfaction with the agency for disrupting their plans and suggested that contract termination would allow them to be together openly. To meet these demands, Kai Li resorted to pawning jewellery, selling her car, and borrowing from loan sharks. The realisation of the fraud left Kai Li feeling "heartbroken" and blaming herself for her gullibility. Desmond Tan, when made aware of the incident, expressed distress and stated he communicates with fans solely through his official fan club and never directly asks for money.
