Adidas is outperforming Nike in World Cup-related apparel because its football range is drawing stronger consumer demand, especially jerseys and team kits. Spending on Adidas apparel rose 70 per cent in May from a year earlier and stayed firm into June, while Adidas store visits in the US jumped 47 per cent in the first World Cup week, far above Nike’s 11 per cent rise at its US factory stores.

The clearest sign of that edge is jersey sales. M Science said Adidas saw “substantial growth” ahead of the tournament, and JD Sports said Mexico jerseys supplied by Adidas were its best-selling team kit in the week beginning June 15.

That demand is also visible in store traffic. Adidas’ US visits were up 16 per cent versus the same week last year, while Nike’s comparable outlet-store traffic fell.

An analyst said Adidas has “the right set of product for the consumer,” but no specific feature, technology, or design was identified as the reason. The available data point to stronger appeal in football apparel rather than a single breakthrough item.

That matters because both brands are heavily exposed to the tournament. Adidas is sponsoring 14 teams and supplying the match ball, while Nike is outfitting 12 national teams and refreshing merchandise across more than 5,000 stores.

Nike has not been absent from the tournament. It had 28 per cent of its World Cup merchandise in the US sold out in the first two weeks, compared with 7 per cent for Adidas, and 232 of the 528 World Cup starters so far wore Nike boots, versus 218 in Adidas.

Even so, the broader sales picture favours Adidas. Nike’s global sports footwear share fell from 29.2 per cent in 2022 to 22.9 per cent last year, while Adidas is showing stronger momentum in World Cup apparel and in football-linked retail activity.
