Drainage Maintenance and River Management

Key activities undertaken by the DID include routine drainage maintenance to ensure water flows freely and prevent blockages that can exacerbate flooding. Alongside this, the department is engaged in deepening rivers and raising river embankments. These physical interventions aim to increase the capacity of waterways and provide better containment during periods of heavy rainfall.
Preparedness for Monsoon Season

In anticipation of the monsoon season, the DID has amassed essential equipment and resources. This includes the deployment of 284 pumps and 35 boats, along with 203 vehicles to aid in flood response operations. Furthermore, a robust monitoring network comprising 995 telemetry stations across the peninsula and 317 stations in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan is in place. This system is complemented by 526 warning sirens to alert communities of impending flood risks.
Non-Structural Flood Management Programmes

Beyond physical infrastructure, the DID also employs non-structural approaches to flood management. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Programme (PRAB) is a significant component of this strategy. Phase 3 of this programme, valued at RM450 million, involves the development and deployment of 74 flood forecasting and warning models tailored for major river basins throughout Malaysia. This initiative aims to provide timely and accurate information to enable effective public response.
