JKR's Role in Disaster Management

The Public Works Department (JKR) is designated by the National Security Council (MKN) 20 to provide vehicles and manpower for disaster site maintenance and transport logistics. Furthermore, JKR is responsible for establishing temporary shelters, offering technical services and expertise in areas such as forensic engineering and geotechnics, and assessing damage to public infrastructure following disasters like landslides or structural failures.
Slope Monitoring and Early Warning Systems

The JKR Slope Engineering Branch is conducting checks on slope drainage systems and identifying potential early signs of slope failure along federal and state roads. Slopes identified as high or very high risk will receive particular attention during patrols and inspections. Thirty-five functioning rain gauge stations on critical slopes along federal roads in Peninsular Malaysia, covering states like Pahang, Kelantan, Kedah, Perak, and Selangor, have been maintained. An early warning system is also in place, which sends alerts via short message system when rainfall rates exceed a threshold value, signalling potential landslides. Similar systems are being established in Sabah and Sarawak, with 12 rain gauge stations awaiting financial allocation approval.
