Perikatan Nasional Recorded the Highest Number of Candidates Losing Deposits

In the recent 16th Johor State Election, a total of 55 candidates forfeited their deposits. Among the contesting parties, Perikatan Nasional (PN) saw the largest number of its candidates fail to meet the required vote threshold, with 21 individuals losing their deposits.

PN fielded a total of 33 candidates across its component parties, including 16 from Bersatu, 11 from PAS, five from the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP), and one from Pejuang. Out of these, 21 candidates did not secure enough votes to retain their electoral deposits. This outcome coincided with PN's inability to expand its influence in the state, as it also lost three seats it had previously won in the 2022 state polls: Bukit Kepong, Maharani, and Endau.
Other Parties and Independents Facing Deposit Forfeiture

Beyond PN, other political entities also experienced significant deposit losses. Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), a relatively new entrant to the political scene, faced a complete setback, with all 15 of its fielded candidates losing their deposits. Additionally, seven candidates from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, all six Independent candidates, and four candidates from the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) also forfeited their deposits. The sole representatives from Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) also failed to retain their deposits.
Demographic Trends in Deposit Losses

A notable trend observed was among younger candidates. A significant portion of those who lost their deposits were in the age group of 18 to 40. Specifically, 21 out of the 51 candidates within this age bracket who contested ultimately lost their deposits, representing 41 per cent of that demographic.
