These figures starkly contrast with developed nations and even other developing countries in the region.
Developed Nations and Malaysia Show Greater Optimism

In contrast to the pessimism in some developing nations, respondents in wealthier countries such as Taiwan, Australia, and Singapore expressed significantly more optimism about gender equality advancing. Collectively, the seven developed countries surveyed scored 62.6. Malaysia also emerged as the most optimistic developing country, with an index score of 54.4, suggesting a perceived positive trajectory for women's equality in the nation.
Disparity Linked to Realisation of Gains

An expert suggested that the differing outlooks are linked to the extent to which women have already experienced improvements. Pauline Tweedie, deputy country representative in Thailand for the Asia Foundation, explained that in developing countries, women may not have yet realised significant gains, leading to less positive expectations for the future.
