Survey Methodology and Demographics

The findings are based on a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center between June 1 and September 4, 2022, which interviewed 13,122 adults across six Asian countries. In Malaysia, 1,999 adults were polled from June 1 to August 9, 2022. The Malaysian sample comprised 75 per cent Muslims, 10 per cent Christians, 7 per cent Buddhists, and 5 per cent Hindus, with 2 per cent identifying as having no religion and 1 per cent following Chinese traditional religions. These figures are broadly comparable to the 2020 Department of Statistics Malaysia census, which reported 63.5 per cent Muslims, 18.7 per cent Buddhists, 9.1 per cent Christians, and 6.1 per cent Hindus.
