Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is set to acquire a 10% stake in London Heathrow Airport, a move that will see Qatar Investment Authority emerge as the largest shareholder. This significant shift in ownership follows the decision by Spanish infrastructure giant Ferrovial to divest its 25% holding for approximately £2.4 billion. Ferrovial, which has been an investor in the airport for 17 years, is selling its stake to multiple buyers.

The divestment will result in Qatar Investment Authority, which already holds a 20% stake, becoming the primary shareholder. French private equity group Ardian will acquire 15% of the shares, positioning it as the second-largest shareholder. In addition to PIF's 10% stake, China Investment Corporation will also hold a 10% interest in the airport. The remaining shares will be distributed among other consortium members, maintaining a structure where these entities hold stakes at a similar level.

Ferrovial's departure marks the end of a long-term involvement that began in 2006 when it initially held 56% of the hub. Over the years, the company gradually reduced its interest, with Heathrow recently reporting its highest-ever September passenger numbers, exceeding seven million and surpassing pre-pandemic traffic levels. Ferrovial has stated its continued commitment to its airport business, which includes stakes in Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports in the UK, as well as interests in Turkey and New York.
