Orphaned Children to be Cared for by Relatives or Institutions

A total of 33 children nationwide who have lost parents or guardians due to Covid-19 will receive care and support. These children will primarily be placed with willing and capable close relatives or next-of-kin. In instances where no suitable relatives are available, the children will be housed in designated child protection institutions or shelters, either on a temporary or permanent basis.
Placement with Relatives and Next-of-Kin

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's initial approach is to identify and facilitate the placement of these orphaned children with their extended family members. The ministry will ensure that any relatives or next-of-kin taking on this responsibility are both willing and capable of providing adequate care for the children. This preference for kinship care aims to maintain familial bonds and provide a familiar environment for the children during a difficult time.
Alternative Care in Institutions and Shelters

Should no suitable relatives be found, the children will be placed in state-run child protection facilities. These include well-established institutions such as the Pokok Sena Children’s Home (RKK) in Kedah, Taman Sinar Puteri (TSP) in Batu Gajah, Perak, and the Cheras TSP in Kuala Lumpur. Other examples of such facilities include the Melaka Boys Home, Mini Kelantan RKK, Kota Kinablu TSP in Sabah, and Kuching TSP in Sarawak. These placements can be either temporary, while long-term solutions are sought, or permanent.
Exploration of Additional Care Options

Beyond placing children with relatives or in existing institutions, the ministry is actively exploring other avenues for care. This includes identifying and vetting suitable and qualified individuals who can take on the responsibility of caring for these children. The ministry is committed to finding the best possible arrangements to ensure the well-being and security of each child affected by the loss of their parents or guardians due to the pandemic.
