George Russell will now start on pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix following a one-place grid penalty issued to Max Verstappen. Verstappen was penalised for impeding Mercedes driver George Russell during qualifying.

Max Verstappen, who had initially secured pole position with a lap time of 1 minute and 20.520 seconds, was found to have unnecessarily impeded George Russell. This manoeuvre, which saw Russell go into the gravel, resulted in the stewards imposing a one-place grid penalty on the newly crowned four-time world champion. Russell had been just 0.055 seconds behind Verstappen's provisional pole time.
Russell's Qualification Performance

Russell had been in strong form during qualifying, initially setting a fast lap that placed him at the front. He clocked 1:21.519 early in the session, a time significantly quicker than Hamilton's best at that point. Despite Verstappen later setting a faster lap of 1:20.687, Russell had improved his own time to 1:21.241 before the final runs. His final lap in the 'top 10 shootout' was 1:20.575, placing him ahead of Charles Leclerc and Norris before Verstappen ultimately posted his fastest time.

Following the penalty to Verstappen and Russell's promotion to pole, Lando Norris will start third, with Oscar Piastri fourth. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is set to start fifth, and Lewis Hamilton will begin the Grand Prix in sixth position.
