Higher Sandbags Required Due to Increased Wave Heights

Higher sandbags are being implemented as a short-term measure to combat coastal erosion in Batu Feringghi and Tanjung Bungah due to a significant increase in wave heights experienced last year. The existing sandbag barriers proved insufficient against the elevated seawater pressure, necessitating the reinforcement and raising of these defences.
Increased Wave Heights Exceeded Barrier Capacity

Last year, wave heights in the affected areas were recorded as being higher than usual. This surge in wave intensity, described as an increase of more than two feet, overwhelmed the existing sandbag barriers. The increased force of the seawater pushed against the barriers, compromising their effectiveness in withstanding the pressure.
Short-Term Solution Underway

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is currently in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out these short-term mitigation works. The new height of the sandbags will be determined by DID to ensure more effective protection against potential future rises in sea levels. These short-term measures are typically expected to last for about a year, with efforts being made to extend their durability.
Long-Term Mitigation Project Under Development

Concurrently, DID is finalising the design for a long-term mitigation project aimed at permanently resolving the coastal erosion issue. This comprehensive project is estimated to cost approximately RM60 million and will consider methods such as the construction of wave breakers, outfalls, and beach nourishment. A similar approach to a previously successful mitigation project near Parkroyal Hotel, which improved beach conditions, will be considered for Batu Feringghi.
