Clarification on the Reworked Mural

The artwork in question, initially featuring a Lego man in a ski mask about to rob a Lego woman with a "Chanel" bag, sparked a public reaction. Media reports suggested Zacharevic had modified the mural, presenting it with the Lego figure holding flowers instead. However, his publicist, Gabija Grusaite, explicitly stated via email that the post featuring the flowers was a fan's repost, identifiable by a hashtag indicating its origin. Grusaite emphasised that Zacharevic continues to create art without compromise, regardless of public outcry.
Official Disapproval of the Original Mural

The original mural drew criticism from state officials. Johor's Chief Police Officer Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff expressed that the depiction was "totally incorrect" and did not accurately represent Johor, asserting that the state is safe for residents and businesses. Similarly, state executive council member for Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Tourism, Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, commented that such imagery would cast the state in a negative light, suggesting that talented individuals should focus on boosting tourism instead.
Johor Baru City Council's Stance

The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) also planned to take action regarding the mural. A spokesperson indicated that notices would be issued to the owners of the buildings displaying the artwork, instructing them to repaint the walls. The council classified the street art as "vandalism" and stated that if the building owners failed to comply, the MBJB would proceed with repainting the walls themselves.
Context of Zacharevic's Work

Ernest Zacharevic gained prominence in Malaysia for his successful wall art in George Town, Penang, as part of the George Town Festival in 2012. His whimsical and poignant pieces, such as "Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur" and "Boy on a Bike," continue to attract visitors.
