The fear was social as well as practical

The fathers were not only dealing with a lack of technique. They also felt uneasy about starting something as visible as hair styling, especially when they had little experience with ponytails, twin braids or criss-cross styles.
The workshop was built to remove that embarrassment

Dads and Braids was set up as a “safe space” where fathers could begin as beginners. The sessions used mannequin heads, a relaxed setting, food and drinks, so participants could practise without feeling exposed.
The founders saw the same hesitation in other fathers

Jeggan Rajendram and Rukshan Chiththananda started the sessions after their own learning experience drew interest from other dads. Those fathers admitted they had avoided styling their daughters’ hair because they feared being judged or ridiculed.
The wider effect was more confidence at home

Participants said even small improvements mattered, with daughters proud to wear “Daddy’s hairstyle” and spouses feeling more supported. Some fathers also said the sessions challenged long-held assumptions that everyday parenting skills should fall only to mothers.
