Datuk Issac Alexander, owner of Tropical Charters, identified that the company's extensive reliance on diesel for its fleet of five large cruise vessels and six smaller crafts was becoming increasingly unsustainable. Diesel fuel represents a significant operational expense, and its combustion releases pollutants that negatively affect the environment. As a marine tourism operator, Alexander felt a strong imperative to safeguard the coastal areas where the company operates, rather than contributing to their degradation.
Development of an Eco-Friendly Model

Motivated by these concerns, Alexander tasked his in-house engineering team with creating an eco-friendly alternative for the company's vessels. This directive led to the successful conversion of the catamaran named Kasi Chan La. The engineering team, comprising nine young marine engineers and supported by interns from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology, redesigned the engine system from a diesel-based circuit to one powered by batteries.
Integration of Solar Power and Future Plans

The energy required to charge the batteries for the Kasi Chan La's electric engine is supplied by solar power cells installed directly onto the catamaran. Following the successful test sail of the Kasi Chan La, Alexander has expressed his intention to convert at least half of his fleet to battery-powered engines, signalling a significant shift towards sustainable operations within the company.
