The workshop was created to remove embarrassment
The sessions were designed as a safe space where fathers could begin as beginners. That matters because many of them had avoided styling their daughters’ hair altogether, even when they wanted to take part in caregiving.
The skill itself had to be learned
Rajendram said his own turning point came when he could barely manage a neat ponytail during a bonding trip with his elder daughter. Rukshan had also been teaching himself to style his daughter’s hair after becoming a full-time caregiver, showing that this was a skill developed through practice rather than something they already knew.
Fathers were looking for a practical way to participate
Each 1.5-hour session gives small groups of dads time to practise on mannequin heads and learn ponytails, twin braids, criss-cross styles and simple accessorising. The relaxed setting, with food and drinks, helped participants swap tips and build confidence step by step.
Small gains at home made the effort worthwhile
Participants said even simple progress changed daily life, with daughters proud to wear “Daddy’s hairstyle” and spouses feeling more supported. Some fathers also said the sessions challenged assumptions that everyday caregiving should fall only on mothers.
