DAP Calls for Home Ministry Action Against Umno Youth Chief Akmal Saleh

DAP national advisor Lim Guan Eng has urged the Home Ministry to take action against Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh. This call stems from Dr Akmal's actions and statements concerning a controversy where the Jalur Gemilang was displayed upside down in Penang. Lim alleges that Dr Akmal's conduct poses a threat to national unity, the administration of justice, and the rule of law.

Lim Guan Eng contends that Dr Akmal's behaviour constitutes an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice and exert pressure on the Attorney-General’s Chambers. Furthermore, he accused Dr Akmal of "bullying" an elderly individual from a minority group. Lim stated that such actions violate the Rukun Negara, the national principles, and endanger national unity, harmony, the justice system, and the rule of law.

The DAP national advisor also pointed out what he described as a double standard in Dr Akmal's approach. Lim highlighted that Dr Akmal has not pursued similar action against government agencies, PAS, or Umno Youth in Terengganu for committing the same offence of displaying the flag incorrectly. This selective action, according to Lim, undermines the principle of equal application of the law.

The incident that sparked the controversy involved a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang. The owner was investigated after the national flag was seen hanging upside down outside his premises. The shop owner reportedly explained that the misplacement was an unintentional mistake made while he was measuring a flagpole and that he had corrected it shortly after.

Dr Akmal Saleh had initially announced plans to organise a protest at the hardware shop. However, this planned gathering did not proceed. Reports indicate that the protest was called off after police presence was established in the area, and participants were advised against proceeding with the demonstration.
