A significant portion of adolescents surveyed in Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang, held the misconception that dementia is a normal aspect of ageing. Nearly 60 per cent of the 916 participants in the study expressed this belief. When dementia symptoms are perceived as simply a natural decline associated with old age, families are less likely to recognise the need for medical evaluation. This normalisation of symptoms can result in a considerable lag between the onset of the condition and the point at which professional help is sought.
Missed Opportunities for Early Diagnosis and Planning

The delay in seeking professional help directly translates to missed opportunities for early diagnosis. An early diagnosis is critical for understanding the specific type of dementia, its progression, and available treatment options. Without this timely identification, individuals and their families lose the chance to plan for future care needs, make informed decisions about finances and legal matters, and access support services that can improve quality of life. The study highlighted that this misunderstanding has serious implications for timely intervention.
Reinforcement of Stigma and Fear

Furthermore, the belief that dementia is a normal part of ageing can indirectly contribute to the stigma surrounding the condition. When cognitive changes are attributed to age rather than a medical issue, there may be less societal urgency to understand and support those affected. This, coupled with other misconceptions, such as the incorrect belief that dementia is contagious (held by 61 per cent of the surveyed adolescents), fosters an environment where fear and avoidance can take root, leading to the isolation of individuals with dementia and their families.
