The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has said it is prepared to seek assistance from international law enforcement agencies, including Interpol, to track down illegal gambling activities or match-fixing syndicates linked to the FIFA World Cup 2026. PDRM added that it is also ready to expand cooperation with foreign enforcement counterparts, including Aseanapol, as monitoring continues.
PDRM’s position on using Interpol assistance
PDRM’s Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said international assistance would be sought if necessary to track down syndicates connected to World Cup 2026 betting. The statement also placed Interpol alongside other foreign enforcement partners, while clarifying that current monitoring is focused on syndicates operating within Malaysia.
Monitoring and enforcement focus on cyber gambling
PDRM said one of the main challenges is the evolving modus operandi of gambling syndicates, which increasingly use technology such as online applications, digital platforms and smart devices. It stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in every contingent has been directed to closely monitor the situation and take firm action to curb cyber gambling activities.
Nationwide operation results announced under Op Soga XI
Before the Interpol-related comments, PDRM’s Bukit Aman CID director Datuk M. Kumar said 58 individuals suspected of illegal betting activities had been arrested under Op Soga XI. The nationwide operation, conducted since June 11, involved collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and it led to the seizure of RM25,684 in cash and betting proceeds totalling RM488,582.
Illegal gambling promotion sites detected during the operation
During Op Soga XI, PDRM said a total of 42 websites used to promote illegal gambling activities were detected. This was presented as part of the broader effort to address betting activities carried out through digital platforms rather than physical premises.
