Divers Adhering to Strict Health Protocols in China

The Malaysian diving contingent, comprising Leong Mun Yee, Pandelela Rinong, Wendy Ng Yan Yee, Kimberly Bong, and Enrique Harold, are training in Chengdu, while Cheong Jun Hoong is based in Qinhuangdao. To mitigate risks associated with the novel coronavirus, the training facilities have been closed to external visitors. Athletes are prohibited from leaving the premises and are required to wear face masks and have their temperatures checked whenever they leave their rooms. Both Chengdu and Qinhuangdao are located over 1,000 kilometres away from Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak.
International Competitions Remain the Focus

These divers are engaged in intensive training for upcoming international events, including the World Cup in Tokyo, scheduled from April 21 to 26. Subsequently, those who have qualified will participate in the 2020 Olympic Games, also to be held in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9. The National Sports Council (NSC) director-general confirmed that the divers' training programme is proceeding as they need to refine their techniques, which involve both dryland and pool sessions.
Decision Pending on Continued Training Post-Visa Renewal

While the squad will not be recalled, a decision regarding their continued training in China after returning home for visa renewals is yet to be made. Pandelela and Mun Yee are scheduled to return on February 2, followed by Wendy, Kimberly, and Enrique on February 13, and Jun Hoong on March 14. The NSC will evaluate the situation upon their return before making any further decisions. The Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports has been in contact with Wisma Putra for travel advisories, and the Malaysian embassy and consulates in China are aware of the athletes' presence. All divers have been briefed on compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by Wisma Putra for Malaysians in China.
