Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, has stated that U.S. companies alone have lost US$324 billion due to their exit. Some firms, like McDonald's, Renault, and Henkel, negotiated buyback options as part of their exit strategies, with Renault notably selling its majority stake in Avtovaz for a nominal one rouble in May 2022, retaining a six-year option to repurchase it.

Despite potential economic incentives, companies that publicly condemned Russia's actions in Ukraine face reputational risks if they return, especially if any resolution involves territorial concessions from Ukraine. Furthermore, Western sanctions continue to restrict companies involved in supplying goods with dual civilian and military applications, including those in the aerospace and technology sectors like Boeing and Airbus, which have halted the supply of planes and parts. The European Union's ongoing imposition of sanctions, such as the ban on primary aluminium imports, further complicates any potential return by prohibiting financial or energy-related services to Russia.
The Russian Market Has Undergone Significant Transformation

The departure of Western brands has created a void filled by Russian imitations and a surge in Chinese market share. Popular brands like Starbucks and IKEA have been replaced by domestic alternatives such as Stars Coffee and Vkusno & tochka, respectively. In the automotive sector, Chinese competitors have dramatically increased their market share to over 50 per cent, up from less than 10 per cent three years ago, presenting a significant challenge for any returning Western car manufacturers. Moscow has also taken control of some Western companies through presidential decrees and court actions, placing them under "temporary management," and many firms were forced to sell their Russian assets at steep discounts.
